SPD 5- “Just a Little Crush”

“Hey Sage, you want to get some dinner off grounds?” I asked as we came in from our combat training.

“Um, actually, I told Sammi I’d go listen to a new song she wrote then I think we were gonna order a pizza.” Sage replied.

“Oh…well maybe we can hang out later? Catch a movie or something?”

“Um, yeah, maybe. We can do something. I need to go shower. See ya later Av.” Sage said as he headed to the boys’ shower room.

Bridget laughed and put her hand on my shoulder, “Give it up Ava, my brother isn’t interested.”

I made a face at her, “Maybe not yet, but he will me.”

“As if my brother would ever date a monumental bore like you.”

“You wanna try saying that to my face?” I asked as I turned to face her.

“Oh, that’s enough.” Angie said.

“You are just a little brat that got a lucky bloodline. You’re not one of us an you never will be. I’m not wasting my time on you Bridget.” I snapped as I headed to the girls’ shower room.

You probably don’t like me right now. I’m not that bad! I promise!

I’m Ava Turner…also known as SPD Yellow. I’m really not a mean person…I just really don’t like Bridget Carson. Why? Well for starters she didn’t work her way up to A-Squad, it was handed to her on a silver platter because of her bloodline. It also doesn’t help that she’s a stuck up little brat. Now, her brother on the other hand…Sage Carson…Sage is amazing. As for the rest of my team? Angie is like my sister and I’m pretty good friends with Dallas and even Sam. Really my only problem is with that brat Bridget. I guess I shouldn’t be surprised though. From what I understand my mom never really liked hers. My mom, Z Turner, once served on SPD with her mom, Savannah Carson. Like mother like daughter I guess. My father was also SPD (as was Bridget’s father). I guess we’re legacies. The thing about that though, being a legacy doesn’t mean you’re worthy. Someone really needs to tell that to Bridget.

Anyway, after we showered Angie, Dallas, and I went to the cafeteria to get dinner. Dallas’s sister Skye was waiting for us. She hung out with us sometimes. I didn’t really like her much more than Bridget…but at least she realized she wasn’t SPD material and stayed in public school.

“So what’s your deal with Bridget Av?” Dallas asked as we sat down.

“I’ve told you before, she doesn’t belong here.” I replied as I took a bite of my salad.

“From what I’ve seen she caught on pretty quick. Bre is a great Ranger.” Skye said.

I rolled my eyes, “You would think so.”

“What does that mean?”

That airheads of a feather flock together.”

“Better an airhead than bee-otch

“Why you little…”

“Hey, enough you two.” Angie said.

“She started it by talking about Bre.” Skye said.

“She’s right. Lay off Bre. She’s worked hard to be a great Ranger.” Dallas said.

“Fine, whatever. Heaven forbid I talk about the princess.” I scoffed. I was really getting tired of that brat.

I joined Sage and Clarissa in Sammi’s room. She played a new song for us.

Wow, that was awesome!” Clarissa said as she finished.

“Yeah, it really was. I like it.” I agreed.

“Very nice.” Sage added.

“Thanks guys. I appreciate the feedback.” Sammi said as she put her pink guitar down, “You think grandma will like it? I was hoping to use it on a demo.”

“I think she’ll love it.” Sage said.

“Awesome. So, you guys wanna order a pizza?”

“Sounds great.” I said.

“What kind?”

“Hawaiian.” Clarissa said.

“EWW, no! Pineapple doesn’t belong on pizza.” Sammi said making a face.

I nodded in agreement, “No lie.”

“Fine, fine. Just get pepperoni then.” Clarissa said.

“OK, great. Sage, can you look up the number to JKP and order it?” Sammi asked.

“Yeah, sure thing.” Sage replied as he pulled out his phone.

“In the meantime, anyone up for a game of Band Hero 20?” Clarissa asked.

“Only if I can sing.” I said.

Sammi usually sings.”

“It’s ok, I can take guitar.” Sammi said.

“Ok fine. I’m bass. I guess that leave Sage with drums.”

“Pizza is on it’s way. Did I get delegated to drums again?” Sage asked.

“Yes, and I’m on vocals. For my first song I’d like to give a shout out to the lovebirds at SPD. Sage and Ava sitting in a tree, k-i-s-s-i-n-g…” I sang.

“BRIDGET!” Sage cried as he threw a drum stick at me.

“Hey!” I cried as I ducked.

Clarissa and Sammi cracked up laughing.

“C’mon Sage, everyone knows Ava has a thing for you.” I said.

“She does not. We’re friends.” Sage said.

“Maybe to you.”

Bre is right. It’s so obvious Ava has a crush on you.” Sammi agreed.

“Totally.” Clarissa added.

“No way. Really?” Sage asked.

“Oh my god. Boys are so blind.” I sighed.

“The real question is, do you like her?” Clarissa asked.

“Um, well, no…I mean I do, but just as a friend. Not like anything more.” Sage replied.

“Then you need to make that clear to her because she is clearly after you.” Sammi said.

“I think you three are making something out of nothing. Ava and I are friends and that’s where it ends.”

I rolled my eyes, “If you say so. Now, let’s rock this place.”

“With you all the way.” Clarissa said as she turned the game on.

After dinner I went to my room to read. It was pretty clear that Sage wasn’t into hanging out tonight. It sucked cause I really did like him. I had pretty much since he’d come to SPD. He wasn’t like most other guys I knew. He was really sweet and compassionate, but still tough when he needed to be. Overall he was a genuinely good person. The kind of guy I wanted to be with.

I was pulled from my thoughts by Angie walking in the room.

“So what’s your deal?” she asked as she sat on her bed, which was parallel to mine.

“What do you mean?” I asked.

“You were even meaner to Skye than normal. Something is clearly bothering you.”

“It’s nothing, really.”

“Oh, right…I’ve known you our whole lives Av…I know when you’re lying. Now what gives?”

I sighed, “Sage…”

“What about Sage?”

“I may as well be invisible to him.”

Ohh…your crush. You like him that much?”

“Yeah, I do.”

“Well, do you know he doesn’t like you back?”

“I all but asked him out and he blew me off.”

“Boys are dense…you have to be straight forward with them. If you like Sage then tell him so.”

“And what if he doesn’t like me back?”

“Then he’s not worth your time anyway.”

“Eh.” I sighed as the alarm sounded

“A-squad Power Rangers to the Command Center!” Kara said over the PA system.

“You heard her, let’s do this.” Angie said as we headed off.

We arrived in the Command Center with the rest of A-Squad. Commander Tate, Kara, and Officer Morrison were waiting for us.

Officer Lillian Morrison was the former A-squad Yellow. She’d served with Bridget and Sam’s Aunt Felicity about six years or so back. After they had completed their mission Lilli was promoted to SPD SWAT trainer and had been doing that ever since.

Anyway, A-squad gathered around for our briefing.

“Rangers, Mirloc has sent a new alien to stop us. This is Lulinx. When engaging her in battle you have to be careful. She holds a powerful container that has the power to contain anything she chooses.” Tate started.

“Even us?” Bridget asked.

“Yes. She can shrink down humans and contain them for her collection. If you get captured it will render you powerless…even your genetic powers will not work in her container.” Tate said.

“She’s also tricky. You have to be careful. My team once battled Lulinx and she nearly won. She has the ability to seem very weak and sympathetic and then when you lower your guard she attacks. You have to be alert. She is not weak and her goal is to add you all to her collection.” Lilli said.

“If you contained Lulinx how is she attacking again?” Angie asked.

“She was contained on SPD Triforia. Mirloc managed to free her.”

“OK, so we recapture her.” Dallas said.

“Yes, but be careful.” Tate said.

“We’re on it Commander.” Angie said, “Ready guys?”

“Ready!” we replied.

“SPD Emergency!”

We arrived in town, where Lulinx was trapping civilians.

“Hey Lulinx, that’s enough!” I called.

“And who have we here?” she asked.

“1, SPD Red!”

“2, SPD Blue!”

“3, SPD Green!”

“4, SPD Yellow!”

“5, SPD Pink!”

“6, SPD Purple!”

“Déjà vu.” Lulinx said as she walked towards us, “Krybots, attack!”

“So that’s how you wanna play it. Dallas, Sam, and Bridget, get the Bots…Ava and Sage, we’re getting Lulinx.” Angie said.

“On it.” We said as we separated.

Lulinx, eat laser.” I said as I fired my gun at her.

“AHH!” Lulinx screamed as she fell to the ground in pain, “I thought SPD used non-lethal force.”

“We use any means necessary.” I said.

“Ava, is your gun on stun or fatal?” Angie asked.

“I…I didn’t check.”

“Oh…it hurts…how could you…ugh…” Lulinx grunted in pain.

“We need to get her to the infirmary, we can contain her after.” Sage said as he went to help the alien up.

“Wait a second…” I said as I suddenly realized what she was doing, “Sage, look out!”

“What?” he asked, but it was too late.

“Not fast enough blue boy.” Lulinx said as she grabbed Sage’s arm. She opened her container and in a puff of smoke Sage was gone.

“NO!” I cried.

“Of all the low things…” Angie started.

“The most compassionate is always the easiest capture.” Lulinx said with a smirk.

“Go to hell.” Angie said as she ran at Lulinx.

“No, Angie!” I cried as Lulinx captured her.

“And the most hot headed is the second easiest.” Lulinx laughed.

I ran for the rest of the team. Lulinx did the same.

“Guys! Look out!” I screamed. Bridget managed to jump out of the way but Sam and Dallas were captured.

“Oh not good.” Bridget said.

“Retreat.” I commanded.

“Right.”

Bridget and I rushed back to the base. Kara and Tate were in the Command Center.

“She got them all…well except us.” Bridget said.

Lilli warned you guys about this.” Tate said.

“What happened out there?” Kara asked.

“She tricked Sage and it was all downhill from there.” I said.

“Figures Sage would feel sorry for the bad guy.” Bridget mumbled.

“He thought she was hurt.”

“Yeah, but she’s the bad guy.”

“He’s too sympathetic.”

“He’s a good guy.”

“Can you guys stop arguing?” Kara asked.

“Sorry. How do we get then back?” I asked.

“I’m not sure but you better think of something fast.”

“Hmm, I think I have an idea…the art of confusion…”

Bridget and I went back out, un-morphed, and found Lulinx. Bridget went invisible and ran up behind her and kicked her forward. She stumbled.

“Who did that?!” she demanded.

“Who indeed?” I asked as I stepped forward.

“You just made a deadly mistake.” Lulinx said as she brought out her containment jar.

Gotta catch me first.” I said as I ran.

Lulinx ran after me, “You’ll never escape!”

“Oh really? Gotta find me first.”

“You’re right there.”

“Oh? Am I? Or am I here?” I asked as I started duplicating myself. “Or over here.”

“Stop that!”

“What’s wrong? Can’t find the real one? Can’t capture a duplicate can you?”

“I will find the real one.”

“Good luck with that.”

While I had Lulinx distracted Bridget, still invisible, went up beside Lulinx and knocked the jar from her hand, breaking it and freeing our friends.

“NO!” Lulinx cried.

“Ok, that was weird.” Sammi said.

“To say the least.” Sage agreed, “You tricked me!”

“It’s over now. You want to do the honor’s Sage?” I asked.

“You saved us…you do it.”

I smiled, “Lulinx, you are charged with kidnapping and conspiracy…and you are…guilty. Containment time!”

Once Lulinx was contained we went back to the Academy and reported to the Command Center.

“Rangers, I’m very disappointed in you…most of you anyway. If it wasn’t for Cadets Carson and Turner, all would have been lost to Lulinx. Cadet Carson I’m…we have two Carsons…Sage, you fell hook line and sinker for Lulinx’s trickery. The rest of you allowed yourselves to be captured as well. I expect more from A-squad. Cadet Turner and Bridget, I am very proud of the creativity and ingenuity you showed when the pressure was on. A-squad and the world are safe thanks to the two of you. The rest of you would do good to follow their example. I think that’s enough for the day.  Dismissed.” Tate said.

“Wow that was brutal.” Sam sighed as we left the Command Center.

“He wasn’t wrong.” Angie said.

“No, but it was s till harsh.”

“Hey, Ava, hold up.” Sage said pulling me to the side so we were alone.

“What’s up?” I asked.

“I just wanted to thank you for saving me. Tate was right, without you we would have been lost.”

“Just did what I had to do.”

“I’m sorry that I’ve been blowing you off…I didn’t mean to be mean to you.”

“Sage, I just…I like you…a lot.”

Sage sighed, “I know you do…but I don’t feel that way about you. You’re an amazing friend and I don’t want to lose that, but we’re just friends.”

I felt like I’d been punched in the gut, but I didn’t want to lose him as a friend either, “Oh…ok…that’s fine. I mean, I would rather be your friend than nothing at all.”

“I really am sorry Ava…you are amazing…but…friends?”

I nodded, “Friends.”

“Great. You wanna go watch a movie?”

“Sure, sounds good.” I said as we headed off. OK, so this wasn’t exactly what I had in mind…but it was better than nothing.
